National Museum of History Reopens on Feb. 21
The National Museum of History (NMH) in Taipei is reopening to the public on Feb. 21 after a five-year renovation. The museum has expanded its exhibition spaces by about 262 pings, a traditional unit of area in Taiwan. The renovation also includes enhanced nighttime lighting to create a scenic nightscape within the Nanhai Academy. The façade now integrates the NMH, the National Taiwan Arts Education Center’s Nanhai Theater, and the corridor landscape between the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute. The renovated NMH features an enlarged display space, a new family-oriented area for children, a national gallery for special exhibitions, and a panoramic dining restaurant. The museum aims to create a continuous public space within the establishment to enhance the recreational environment of Nanhai Cultural Park. The new evening lighting aims to boost the overall ambiance of the Nanhai Academy.

Taiwan gymnasts eye Olympic glory at Paris summer games
Taiwan’s gymnastics team coach, Lin Yu-hsin, expressed confidence in the medal prospects of Tang Chia-hung and Olympic silver medalist Lee Chih-kai for the upcoming Paris Summer Olympics. The Taiwanese gymnasts recently visited the Accor Arena, the recognized gymnastics venue, and Lin confirmed that the warm-up venue adheres to global standards. Although no Taiwanese athlete has secured qualification yet, Lin believes that Lee’s performance in pommel horse, Tang’s performance in horizontal bar, and Lin Kuan-yi’s performance in rings could earn them a place in the Olympics and potentially podium finishes. The Accor Arena has hosted various sports events since 1984 and underwent recent renovations. Taiwan plans to send six participants, including Lee Chih-kai, Hsiao Yu-jan, Tang Chia-hung, Hung Yuan-hsi, Lin Kuan-yi, and Tseng Wei-sheng. Lin emphasized the importance of sending strong individual contestants focused on health to secure points. Lee Chih-kai and Tang Chia-hung, both recognized for their skilled performances and reputation, are expected to easily qualify due to their prime age.

Taipei railway dorm redevelopment on TRA agenda

The TRA intends to construct a hotel and residential tower on the 1.2-hectare site, with development expected to begin in the third quarter of 2024. The estimated development scale is NT$6.23 billion, with residential tower prices potentially exceeding NT$2 million per ping. The TRA is considering different development methods, weighing the benefits and drawbacks of lengthy renovation processes for greater volume rewards versus faster construction with commercial developers but less building area. The final decision on the development method will be made by the TRA’s board of directors, while the allocation of renovations or joint construction may be outsourced or managed under a lease agreement.

Eslite Xinyi closes after 18 years, marks end of an era
The Eslite Xinyi Store, a popular local bookstore in Taipei, closed its doors on Christmas Eve 2023. The farewell was emotional, with many visitors leaving thank you and goodbye messages on a memorial board. Over its 18-year tenure, the store welcomed an estimated 200 million people, averaging 10 million visits annually. The closure was due to the Uni-President Group reclaiming the land for redevelopment. The torch of being a 24-hour bookstore will be passed on to the Songyan store starting Jan. 20, 2024. The Songyan store is expected to triple its book capacity and draw increased traffic to Taipei’s Eastern District once renovations are complete.
